I have a plan.
I’m going to take a voyage into the dangerous Sea of Retcon, via Rewrite Highway.
Hands-On was the first thing I ever wrote in the Special People universe, and to be honest I just don’t think it fits in that well anymore. It’s very lighthearted and goofy (which is fine), but it doesn’t connect to the main storyline in a meaningful way. It’s also pretty short for a standalone story arc, at only 7,500 words compared to the 30,000+ of Who Killed Walter Carton? and Hide and Seek.
King of the Dark introduces a more serious tone to Special People and injects ongoing continuity and a larger world and plot, but its connection to Hands-On before it and WKWC? after it needs to be more obvious. I want to tie the threads together in a clearer way.
I’m in the outlining phases for Hands-On version 2, choosing the scenes I want to add and the changes I want to make. Once I have my plan in place, I’m going to start editing and writing, and I’ll release the “new” Hands-On section by section on the site as if it was a completely new story arc.
Once Hands-On is finished, I’ll move forward with the same approach for King of the Dark.
After King of the Dark, I’m going to make some edits to WKWC? and Hide and Seek, but I don’t plan to do major rewrites of those two arcs.
The next step after that will be to hopefully kick off a brand new arc and continue the story!
I would like to start posting the new Hands-On during May 2014.
I’m not going to commit to a firm posting schedule off the bat, but I’d like to target one update per week.
My Question For You
Something I’m not sure about is how to deal with the “old” Hands-On and King of the Dark while I’m rewriting them. Should I leave the old versions up on the site for people to read if they want to? Should I remove them? Should I archive them somewhere out of the way?
I have to think about this some more, but I’d welcome some input from readers. Vote in the poll or leave a comment and let me know what you think I should do.
